Hidden Hollow Legend

Hidden Hollow Legend

You asked for it? You got it. The Hidden Hollow weekend Star Party at Warren Rupp Observatory will be back again this year the weekend of September 18-20!

For long time star party fans, you know the legend of Hidden Hollow as one of the friendliest and most comfortable star parties around. We're nestled deep in the woods of Hidden Hollow resident camp in northeast Ohio near the town of Mansfield. Each year we provide some of the finest guest speakers available and they join in the fun! You'll see our speakers and all of our great and unusual activities. Tired of the same old type of Star Party? You won't be bored this year, I promise. You're going to really enjoy the things we have to offer!

Unlike other star parties, we provide cabins and bunkhouses for your comfort, as well as primative camping, hot showers, modern restrooms and a food service vendor. If it rains? It's no problem. We have indoor facilities and all activities go on. There's warm areas where you can gather around a fire and converse, places to watch movies, play cards or just hang out. The observing field is well-drained and groomed with plenty of "space" to go around and, of course, you won't want to miss the views through the Obsevatory's incredible 31" Big Blue Beast!

One of the most appealing parts about Hidden Hollow is the location itself. Even if you aren't interested in staying up all night observing, you'll fully appreciate the fine scenery of the camp itself. During the Fall season, Ohio offers some of the most spectacular foilage in the United States and the pristine, quiet and peaceful surroundings of Hidden Hollow are an ideal place to relax and have an enjoyable weekend. There's plenty of trails to walk in the woods and nearby attractions, restaurants and shopping. Children and families are always welcome here!

Thanks to wide open spaces and peaceful seclusion you'll have a wonderful time at the Hidden Hollow Star Party. Our guests have voted us #1 as one of the most beautiful astronomical retreats in the country. During your weekend stay you'll be treated like family as you enjoy our many workshops, contests, vendors, programs, fantastic prizes and observing. We welcome visitors of all ages and you'll find that no matter where you roam... There's no place like our home!

Come on in. Explore our guest speakers such as Brent Archinal from the Lunar Orbiter Program, Warren Keller, Al Loew from NASA/Glenn, Dave Holden, Ed Jones and more! Our activities and the things you'll have to do and see while you're here are listed on our Hidden Hollow Website  and we know you'll enjoy yourself. Join us here for Hidden Hollow '09 and you see why our friends return year after year!

Place:
Canada, Cypress Hills Saskatchewan, Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park
Description:

In August 2009, come to the Cypress Hills Dark Sky Preserve and do something never done before at an RASC General Assembly: be armchair astronomers during the day and real astronomers at night! We are delighted that the 2009 RASC General Assembly has been awarded to the Saskatoon Centre of the RASC. The 2009 GA will be held in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Summer Star Party. 2009 is also the International Year of Astronomy and the 2009 GA will be held, for the first time, at a dark sky site. It is our goal to provide an affordable, memorable GA where participants can observe under some of the darkest skies in Canada, and still enjoy the traditional social & business activities of a GA.

What better place to hold the GA than at the Cypress Hills Dark-Sky Preserve, with light pollution abatement featured as one of IYA's themes? The GA will include all the activities of past GAs but will also include observing and clinics under magnitude 7+ skies! Cabin, condo and hotel rooms are available. There is also ample room for tents and powered RV sites.

Planned day-time events include a BBQ, the Ruth Northcott Lecture, solar observing, an IYA "Galileo Moment", scientific presentations and poster sessions, a Wine and Cheese reception, the Fr. Lucien Kemble Lecture, Banquet, tours of the Maple Creek Winery and Fort Walsh, National Council meetings and Annual Meeting.

CHIPP and the Cypress Hills DSP are located in southwestern corner of Saskatchewan 30km south of Maple Creek on Hwy 21. Nearest fly-in centres are Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary (and possibly Medicine Hat, AB). Centre Representatives who are planning to fly in for the weekend should book into Saskatoon (YXE) where they will be met, housed, fed and transported to and from the SSSP/GA'09 by kind, friendly Saskatoon Centre chaperones. We will have some loaner telescopes and camping equipment available for reps that cannot bring their own. For those who can fly into Saskatoon on Tuesday August 11, we have arranged a tour of the Canadian Light Source (the "synchrotron") at the University of Saskatchewan campus on Tuesday evening.

For more information, contact the SSSP/GA organizing committee at:sssp.sk@sasktel.net.
