The great spiral galaxy in Andromeda, known to backyard stargazers as M31 (because it's the 31st entry in a catalog compiled by 18th-century French comet hunter Charles Messier), is a near-twin to our own Milky Way. And, like our galaxy, it is accompanied by two prominent satellites, compact M32 (below center) and diffuse M110 (top right).
